What the Planner Helps You Decide

A campsite generator setup involves more than choosing a quiet model. You must balance electrical capacity, distance, fuel, neighboring campers and safe exhaust placement.

The planner answers four separate questions:

  1. How loud might the generator sound at your RV?
  2. How much sound might reach the neighboring campsite?
  3. Should the available fuel cover your desired runtime?
  4. Does the proposed placement create an obvious carbon-monoxide, fire or overload concern?

These results are planning estimates. They cannot predict every campsite condition, but they provide a more useful starting point than considering the generator’s advertised noise rating or maximum runtime by itself.

Generator noise rating and reference distance

Enter the published sound rating and the distance at which it was measured.

For example, a manufacturer might publish:

  • 52 dBA at 23 feet
  • 58 dBA at 25 feet
  • 60 dBA at 7 meters

The reference distance matters. A 52-dBA measurement taken at 23 feet cannot be compared directly with a 52-dBA measurement taken at 7 feet.

If the manufacturer publishes a noise range, use the figure that most closely represents the load you expect to operate. The higher figure is the more conservative choice when the testing conditions are unclear.

Distance to your RV

Measure from the planned generator position to the nearest relevant part of the RV.

For safety planning, do not measure only to the center of the RV or the campsite marker. Consider the nearest:

  • Door
  • Window
  • Roof or sidewall vent
  • Slide opening
  • Tent or screened shelter
  • Outdoor seating area
  • Other occupied space

The generator must remain outdoors with its exhaust directed away from occupied areas and openings.

Distance to the neighboring campsite

Enter the approximate distance from the generator to the nearest neighboring occupied area.

This measurement helps estimate the sound another camper might hear. It should also make you look beyond your own RV when choosing an exhaust direction.

A position that directs exhaust away from your RV but toward another camper, tent or vehicle is not an acceptable solution.

Expected electrical load

Enter the total running wattage you expect the generator to supply.

This is not necessarily the same as the generator’s advertised wattage. The expected load should include the equipment likely to operate simultaneously, such as:

  • RV air conditioner
  • Battery converter
  • Refrigerator
  • Television
  • Lights
  • Device chargers
  • Coffee maker
  • Microwave

Motors and compressors can require substantially more power while starting than they use after they are running. Use the RV Generator Wattage Calculator if you have not already estimated your continuous load and startup demand.

Running watts per generator

Enter the manufacturer’s running or continuous wattage—not the larger starting or peak rating.

If you plan to operate on propane, use the propane-specific running-watt rating when the manufacturer provides one. Many dual-fuel generators produce less power on propane than on gasoline.

For two generators, enter the running watts of one generator. The planner assumes two identical machines sharing the load evenly.

Fuel and tank size

Choose gasoline, propane or diesel and enter the usable fuel available to each generator.

For gasoline and diesel models, this will normally be the generator’s onboard tank capacity. For propane, enter the amount of propane available to each generator in pounds.

The most reliable runtime calculation uses a manufacturer-published fuel-consumption rate at a known load. Open the planner’s advanced section to enter that figure.

When no manufacturer rate is supplied, the planner uses a disclosed model-neutral estimate. Treat that result as a planning range rather than a guaranteed runtime.

How the Noise Estimate Works

The planner uses the inverse-square relationship for sound from an ideal point source:

Estimated dBA = published dBA + 20 × log₁₀(reference distance ÷ target distance)

Under ideal free-field conditions, sound pressure decreases by approximately 6 dB each time the distance from the source doubles. OSHA explains this relationship while also noting that walls, machinery and other reflective surfaces make real sound fields more complicated.

A generator rated at 58 dBA from 23 feet would therefore have an ideal estimate of approximately:

  • 58 dBA at 23 feet
  • 52 dBA at 46 feet
  • 46 dBA at 92 feet

Actual campsite measurements can differ from calculated sound levels because of terrain, reflections, wind and electrical load.

A real campsite is not an ideal free field. The estimate can be affected by:

  • RV walls and neighboring vehicles
  • Trees, slopes and uneven terrain
  • Hard pavement or concrete pads
  • Fences and campground structures
  • Generator and exhaust orientation
  • Wind direction
  • Electrical load
  • Economy-mode behavior
  • Multiple sound sources

Use the number to compare possible placements—not as a promise of the exact reading a sound-level meter will produce.

What Changes When Two Generators Are Running?

Two identical generators do not simply double the displayed decibel number.

When two equally loud sources operate together, their combined sound level increases by approximately 3 dB. Therefore, two generators individually producing 55 dBA at a listening position would combine to approximately 58 dBA under the calculator’s assumptions.

The planner applies this adjustment to both campsite locations.

Two generators can still be useful because they allow staged operation. You may be able to run one unit during light-load periods and start the second only when an air conditioner or another substantial load requires it.

Reading Your Fuel-Runtime Result

The runtime card shows how long each generator is estimated to operate from the entered fuel supply.

When two identical generators are selected, the planner assumes:

  • Both generators operate simultaneously
  • The electrical load is divided evenly
  • Each generator has the entered fuel quantity
  • Both have similar fuel consumption

The result also reports the estimated burn rate and indicates whether the available fuel should cover the desired operating period.

A runtime shortage does not mean the generator should be refueled while running. It means the plan needs to change. Possible responses include:

  • Beginning with more safely stored fuel
  • Reducing electrical demand
  • Scheduling a shutdown and cooling period
  • Operating one generator during lighter loads
  • Shortening the planned runtime
  • Using shore power or a power station during quiet periods

Actual consumption can change with temperature, altitude, fuel quality, maintenance, engine condition and rapidly cycling loads. A manufacturer’s consumption curve for the exact model is more reliable than a general fuel estimate.

Turn the Results Into a Campsite Layout

The best generator position is not necessarily the farthest point from your RV. It must work safely for everyone nearby.

Use the results in this order:

1. Eliminate unsafe locations

Reject positions inside or beneath:

  • RV storage compartments
  • Vehicles
  • Tents
  • Garages or sheds
  • Screened rooms
  • Awnings
  • Tarps not designed for operating generators
  • Homemade soundproof boxes

Opening a door or window does not make an enclosed or partly enclosed location safe.

2. Check every occupied area

Look beyond your own RV. Identify neighboring RVs, tents, windows, doors, vents, picnic tables and gathering areas.

The CPSC recommends operating portable generators outdoors at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust directed away from entrances and openings. The CDC similarly says generators should be used outdoors more than 20 feet from windows, doors and vents.

Treat 20 feet as a safety minimum—not a guarantee that every campsite position beyond it is safe. Follow the generator manual when it requires additional clearance.

3. Point the exhaust safely

The exhaust should face away from:

  • Your RV
  • Neighboring campsites
  • Tents
  • Doors and windows
  • Ventilation openings
  • People and pets
  • Outdoor seating areas

Do not rely solely on the current wind direction. Airflow can change or circulate unpredictably around RVs, vehicles and barriers.

4. Increase distance where practical

Distance is one of the safest ways to reduce the sound reaching a listener because it does not restrict the generator’s cooling or exhaust flow.

If the cord length and site layout allow it, compare multiple distances in the planner. Doubling the generator-to-listener distance reduces the ideal estimate by approximately 6 dB.

Use outdoor-rated, grounded cords that are properly sized for the connected load. Do not use a longer undersized cord simply to gain more distance.

5. Avoid unsafe noise enclosures

A homemade box can reduce sound while trapping heat and carbon monoxide. That trade is unacceptable.

A freestanding sound barrier may interrupt the direct sound path without enclosing the generator, but it must preserve all manufacturer-required clearances and cooling airflow.

Carbon-Monoxide and Fire Safety

Carbon monoxide cannot be seen, smelled or heard. A generator’s CO shutoff feature is useful, but it does not replace safe placement.

Before operating a campsite generator:

  • Keep it outdoors and away from occupied spaces and openings.
  • Direct exhaust away from RVs, tents and people.
  • Use working battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarms inside the RV.
  • Never operate it in an RV compartment or partially enclosed shelter.
  • Shut the generator off and allow it to cool before refueling.
  • Keep fuel away from flames, sparks and hot components.
  • Use outdoor-rated electrical cords in good condition.
  • Follow the manual’s grounding and wet-weather instructions.
  • Never connect a generator to an electrical system through an ordinary wall receptacle.

The U.S. Fire Administration warns against fueling a running generator because spilled fuel can ignite on a hot engine.

If a CO alarm sounds or anyone experiences headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, chest pain or confusion, move into fresh air and seek emergency assistance. Do not remain inside while trying to identify the source.

Why Campground Rules Are Not Included

Quiet hours and generator-use policies are not universal.

Rules may differ by:

  • National, state or private campground
  • Individual campground loop
  • Season
  • Fire restrictions
  • Local air-quality requirements
  • Length of stay
  • Site type
  • Temporary emergency conditions

A rule stored inside a calculator could become outdated without warning. For that reason, the Quiet Campsite Generator Planner intentionally does not approve operating hours or determine whether generator use is permitted.

Before arriving, check the campground’s current official website, reservation notice or posted entrance rules. If the policy is unclear, contact the campground directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far should a generator be from an RV?

Operate it outdoors and follow the manufacturer’s placement requirements. Current CPSC and CDC guidance calls for at least 20 feet of separation from buildings, doors, windows and vents, with exhaust directed away. At a campsite, also consider tents, neighboring RVs and occupied outdoor areas.

Is a generator quieter behind an RV?

An RV may block some direct sound, but it can also reflect noise or interfere with safe exhaust dispersal. Never use the RV as a sound barrier if doing so places the generator near a door, window, vent, compartment or neighboring site.

Are two generators twice as loud as one?

No. Two identical generators producing equal sound at the listener add approximately 3 dB—not 100% to the decibel number. They may still be more disruptive because two engines and exhaust systems are operating.

Why does my generator sound louder than the planner predicts?

The calculation assumes ideal open-space propagation. Nearby RVs, pavement, walls, terrain, wind, exhaust direction and higher electrical load can all increase the sound reaching a particular location.

How accurate is the runtime estimate?

It is most useful when you enter a manufacturer-published fuel-consumption figure at a known load. Without that figure, the result is a model-neutral planning estimate. Actual runtime should be verified with the generator manual and conservative real-world testing.

Does the planner include air-conditioner starting watts?

Does the planner tell me when campground generators are permitted?

No. It intentionally excludes quiet hours and generator policies because they can change. Verify the campground’s current official rules before operating a generator.

Plan Before You Start the Engine

A quiet campsite setup depends on the complete plan: generator design, electrical load, operating distance, fuel supply, exhaust direction and the location of everyone nearby.

Use the planner before leaving home, print the diagram and then confirm every distance after parking the RV. If the real campsite does not provide a safe operating location, do not run the generator there.
